Do you want to try to match the theme? Or are you just trying to stay within a certain color scheme? Whatever type of dress or outfit you’re looking for, it’s helpful to have an idea of what you want before you start shopping.
In addition to knowing what type of look you’re going for, you’ll also need to determine your budget. This will help you to narrow your search and only focus on dresses that you may actually end up purchasing.
The last thing to consider when choosing your dress or outfit is if you plan to match your date. If you are planning to match your date, it’s a good idea to coordinate your outfits (whether that’s matching exactly or just making sure your colors/patterns don’t clash). That way you can be sure you’ll have amazing pictures!
Accessories
Ok so you’ve got your dress picked out, so what’s next on the prom checklist? Accessories! What jewelry is going to pair well with your dress? Do you need to get a new pair of shoes or do you already have the perfect pair? Do you plan to carry a purse or clutch?
One thing to keep in mind, as you’re choosing accessories be sure to try them on all together. As you’re purchasing accessories at different times and in different stores, you may think they’ll all work together. However, you won’t truly know until you try everything on!
Hair
Now that you’ve got your dress/outfit picked out and all the perfect accessories to go with it, you’re ready for the actual day – prom is here! If you’re wondering what to do before prom, then let’s start with hair.
There are so many hairstyles to choose from, so how do you decide what’s right for you? First of all, think of your neckline and jewelry. Would an updo suit your neckline best and showcase your necklace and earrings more prominently? Or maybe you prefer your hair down. Either way, make sure you pick the look that is going to help you to feel your best.
Makeup
After hair comes makeup. It’s a good idea to be strategic with the order of your get ready for prom checklist. Since it may be warm on the day that you’re getting ready for prom, you’ll likely want to do your hair (aka use hot tools) before you apply a full face of makeup.
When you’re creating a makeup look for a special event it’s important to make sure you still look like yourself. Try to create a makeup look that’s an elevated version of what you normally wear on a daily basis. You want to avoid looking back on pictures and thinking, “Who even is that?!”.
That’s not to say you should shy away from trying something new! Try out something bold! Use a fun color! Incorporate glitter, rhinestones, studs, or whatever else you want to try. If you are trying a new look, remember that the best way to perfect it is by using a high quality makeup mirror. That way you can be sure your look is perfect from every angle.

You’re dressed and ready to have some fun! But before you head out, be sure to take some pictures! You’ll look back on these pictures for years to come and remember all the incredible memories from prom night. It’s a good idea to find the right spot for pictures. Remember to keep the background, lighting, and number of people in mind. That way, you’re sure to get the perfect shot!
