If you’re starting beauty school, you’re probably going through a range of emotions – excitement, anticipation, nervousness, maybe a little fear. That’s all totally normal! There are a couple ways you can prep ahead of time to help reduce some of that nervousness. One of the most helpful ways is getting/putting together your cosmetology kit.

So what actually goes into a cosmetology student kit? Below we’ll walk you through everything you need in your cosmetology starter kit and how you can properly prepare for starting beauty school.

Cosmetology Kit Contents

What you need for cosmetology school may vary a little bit depending on your school, program, etc., but the items listed below are the most common things that you’ll need in your kit. Be sure to check your school’s requirements, though, to ensure you’re getting the right kit.

It’s also important to note that you can purchase a full cosmetology starter kit that already has everything you need. Or it can also be possible to buy the items separately and assemble them yourself. If you decide to go that route, it can be cheaper but also much more time consuming, so it’s important to be aware of that before you get started.

Cosmetology Kit Extras

While this is a good starting list for what goes in a cosmetology kit, there are a couple other extras that you may be required to have or are just good things to add. Cotton balls and Q-tips are always helpful to have, and luckily they don’t take up too much space! Hair ties are helpful to add. You never know when you might need to pull your hair or your client’s hair up. And don’t forget disinfectant wipes. You’ll likely go through those pretty quickly.

Another thing to be aware of is your cosmetology kit case. Find out if your program requires you to bring your kit with you or if you store it onsite. That will help you determine the best type of case for you. Be sure to keep your kit organized as well. You may find that organizing your tools based on your program schedule is the most helpful. That way, you don’t bring along your manicure set if you know you won’t be needing it that week.

Now that you’ve got a better idea of what you need in your cosmetology starter kit, you can feel confident about starting beauty school on the right foot! Be sure to check your school’s list to make sure you have everything you need and don’t forget to organize. That way, on day one you’ll feel prepped and ready to conquer cosmetology school!
